With Mad Decent’s Paul Devro coming to the Danceteria for our last, huge party before the lockout takes effect, we asked Levins to give us an intro to one of his fave DJs…
We’ve been fans of Paul Devro for a long time. You might not be familiar with his name but there’s no doubt you’d have heard of one of the many projects he’s worked on over the past five years. Working behind the scenes of Diplo’s Mad Decent label since its inception in 2006, Paul has acted as a creative director (some would even say as “spiritual guide”) on most Mad Decent releases, plus everything that has been released on Mad Decent’s digital only imprint Jeffrees.
Paul is also an exceptional DJ, with a beyond eclectic taste and the ability to play all of his musical interests seamlessly in a DJ set. He’s played shows across all the continents (he’s just come to Australia from South Africa) and has an amazing habit of seeking out the most exciting sounds he can find in each town he visits, before sharing it with the world. Paul has been responsible for some of my favourite DJ mixes over the last few years and I thought it would be a cool move to highlight some of his best ones before he plays Goodgod this Saturday night. This will actually be Paul’s second time playing at Goodgod, he played with us in 2009 when Goodgod was just a space out the back of La Campana. Kool fact: During that tour Paul told me that Sleater Brockman was a stupid DJ name and that I should just DJ as Levins, since everybody knew me as that anyway.
Life changing revelations aside, here are my favourite Paul Devro mixes:
During those unfortunate (but frequent) times where my hard drive reaches it’s capacity, the first thing I do is arrange my iTunes by song length and delete all of the DJ mixes on there. This is one of the few mixes that has survived each of those frantic delete sessions. Forty minutes of almost everything. This mix from 2009 was the first time I heard DJ Nate – and the last time I heard any Deee-Lite song besides Groove Is In the Heart. There are a lot of amazing moments on this mix but by far my favourite part is the slowed down Do You Mind by Kyla / Crazy Cousins. He made a UK Funky song sound like a reggaeton track! I can’t recommend this mix enough.
Mixpak Records is always on point with their releases (most of them get played regularly by DJs at Goodgod) and their mix series Mixpak FM is also very on point, featuring varied mixes by forward thinking selectors from all over. Paul manages to pay tribute to the Mixpak label, while playing his signature global kitchen sink selections – you’ll find dancehall next to crazy club remixes of rap and other tropical joints. Fun!
Devro has made 2 mixes for the Adam Selman clothing line, the first was a great disco mix that featured disco tracks from everywhere, this very recent mix focuses solely on Indian disco. It’s so sick and highlights Paul’s close connection to India – besides always including Bollywood hits in his sets, Paul has spent toured there and even spent time recording young Indian singers. Supposedly he recorded enough to put an album out which will probably never get released because we don’t deserve such a thing. Wah.
This was a mix Devro made for the first episode of Diplo’s show on BBC 1XTRA in 2012. It’s definitely the most party of all these mixes but there is a stack of rare gems to be heard here, some unofficial remixes of bigger songs, other tunes released through Jeffree’s. It’s worth noting that a handful of songs on this mix went on to become huge hits – especially Baauer’s Youtube anthem Harlem Shake.
Another party mix – this one was made to promote the ever expanding Mad Decent Block Party tour, featuring only songs by artists performing at the Block Parties. It’s a nice representation of what Mad Decent was doing a couple of years ago and a great showcase of Paul’s ability to smoothly mix different genres of music.
We’re looking forward to seeing Paul play an insane mix of everything good this Saturday night with Levins, Shantan, Mat Cant and I Am Jesse. It’s our last Saturday night before the lockout laws come in and we can’t think of a better DJ to welcome the early hours with than Paul Devro.
