MY DISCO (MELB)

If techno was made with a guitar, bass and drum kit, then My Disco would be credited with inventing it. The band locks into such minimalist, repetitive, loud and intense grooves that the body can’t help but move in awe. My Disco tour South East Asia, the US and Europe more often than Australia – another one of those bands recognized way more by the world beyond than at home – but we’ve enticed them up to Sydney to give us a preview of their forthcoming record.

THE LAURELS

The Laurels debut album Plains is wild ride through dense, billowing sonic brilliance. Their “wall of sound” lends itself to far-reaching influences; from experimental sonic pioneers The Velvet Underground through to the inner city punk of Australian legends The Saints and the trance-like psychedelia of Spacemen 3, all the way back to the lush pop harmonies of the 60s. Their sold-out performances around the country have quickly estbalished them as one of Australia’s best live acts today.

BART WILLOUGHBY & SELWYN BURNS play NO FIXED ADDRESS

When Adelaide’s No Fixed Address formed in 1978, there was no such thing as an all-Aboriginal rock’n’roll band. NFA took it further by mixing a reggae-influenced, politicized garage sound. Their first big statement came with the experimental, semi-biographical road trip drama Wrong Side of the Road, depicting the racism levelled against Aboriginal musicians trying to get gigs in country pubs. When their debut LP, From My Eyes, was released in 1982 their radical and outspoken stance had grown such a following that even whilst featuring songs such as We Have Survived and Pigs, the record was launched by PM Bob Hawke at Sydney’s Hilton Hotel! They became the first Indigenous band to tour Europe where they linked up with like-minded musicians, such as The Clash, Peter Tosh and Ian Dury. It is a rare gift to have two original members Bart Willoughby (vocals) and Selwyn Burns (guitar) will be performing their No Fixed Address songs. This is the garage rock history that you need to know.

NO ZU (MELB)

Melbourne ‘heat-beat’ warehouse disco-funk collective, No Zu, blew the sails off the Opera House at Goodgod’s Vivid night and are returning north to launch their debut album, Life. These guys are a wild 6 piece on stage, crazy percussive, totally delay drenched and perfect for our late late night dancefloor.

THE FIGHTING LEAGUE (CANBERRA)

Self proclaimed “Kings of The Capital”, Canberra’s The Fighting League are on a one-way kamikaze mission to spread their very own brand of Tropical Punk to the masses. Front man Dominic Death‘s howls of love, loss, mates and dates give each stomper equal parts soul and fire. We became believers in The Fighting League when we saw them live in all their chest thumpin’, bunny hoppin’, van-damme fly kickin’ glory.

SONGS

The songs of Songs are jammed with a timeless nostalgia; the warm, familiar textures of 60’s pop, Dunedin’s lo-fi Flying Nun 80’s sound or 90’s indie hooks all feel equally close. But no matter the references, the dual vocals and songwriting of Ela Stiles and Max Doyle create something completely their own. And when they played the Twerps record launch a couple of months ago, they’re sounding completely better than ever!

CLIENT LIAISON (MELB)

Here’s two contemporary Melbourne fellows in constant melodic devotion to 80’s Australiana: Johnny Farnham, INXS, Flash & The Pan, Men at Work, Icehouse and now Client Liaison. But as their motto “international in flavour, cosmopolitan in style” claims, this music is the brand of incredible balladeering that we know will get them global recognition. The whispers are growing that these Citizens have just signed to Tiga’s Turbo Recordings label.

POP SINGLES (MELB)

Melbourne’s Pop Single’s are a dichotomy. They’re a simple 3 piece band but their songs are  anything but simble. Their melancholic jams summon feelings that are simultaneously at odds with each other; certainty and displacement, loss and hope, passion and nonchalance. It’s the way every song sounds so earnest and relatable that has got us listening to their debut LP “All Gone” over and over.

DANIEL DARLING

Daniel Darling is someone who travels between music adventures such as Kill City Creeps, The Dolly Rocker Movement & Los Sundowners. He’s also teamed up with the Yo Grito! Dj’s who supply Goodgod’s front bar with a 60’s dancefloor every Friday night. Ocassionaly a solo show comes along and with the up and coming Goodgod Birthday Daniel Darling will be performing a set of Psychedelic Pop & Organ Tunes composed exclusively for the party!

BLOODS

Sydney’s most loved garage pop band Bloods keep proving all you really need to start a party is a Guitar, Bass and Drums. Get busy to their ecstatic fuzzed out riffs and let those 1950s doo wop vocals hook you through!

TYSON KOH

The Lord of Loose Joints bounding through on your weekly airwaves is a man who can provide you with fit n’ healthy trip through his retrospective ear. Join Tyson and his infinite stack of music from the weird and wonderful places of this globe with a thirst for the obscure and admiration of the popular.

YO GRITO DJs

Yo Grito are King Opp from the Straight Arrows, Daniel Darling from the Kill City Creeps, & Silky Doyle from FBi’s Dusty Fingers radio show. Together they are spirited voodoo trifusion of fazed and fuzzed guitar chords and freaky Rock n Roll racket that will shake the bop out of your bones. The Friday night Front Bar is their loyal haunt and every week the Grito gang lead a faithful dancefloor twistin, turnin’ and freaking all night long

KIRIN J CALLINAN (Host)

Kirin is one of a kind. Whether he’s commanding an apocalyptic haze of noise with his guitar, or crooning songs of sex and religion, he does it in a way that is always theatrical and mind-blowing. Which is why we had to get him to host Saturday’s marathon bandstand! He’s channeled the persona of leisure suit game show hosts of yesteryear for the gig. Catch him weilding around a microphone with cameraman in tow as he covers all of Saturday’s festivities.

Siberia Presents…THE GOODGOD HOUSE BAND

It’s the return of our big occasion band! The concept was to get together a brilliantly spontaneous garage band to rock through covers of 80’s / 90’s dance hits whilst friends and crowd members get up on stage to perform the lyrics. All credit is to Daniel Stricker, Midnight Juggernauts drummer and Siberia Records spiritual guru / head honcho, who has a knack for pulling together a super group quite like none other.

Last year’s band’s performance is one of the most talked about Goodgod nights ever. With Ed Banger’s SebAstian lending vocals for a blistering reendition of Scatman.

MICHAEL OZONE (MELB)

Michael Ozone is an artist that embodies a wicked absurdist-like energy. Swinging his brand of chewed up 80s VHS nostalgia, the Melbourne one-man wonder has been slicing up dance floors all over Australiana. Having just released his brilliant spooked out debut 12″ on ESP Institute, as well as launching his own Home Loan Records label, Ozone is one talented and frenetic man. Come and dance when he turns Goodgod into his own cosmic island utopia.

SLOW BLOW

DJs Dreamcatcher and Junglesnake have been calling the Goodgod danceteria their own ever since the club opened! Their monthly party, “SLOW BLOW” started as an excuse to blow the dust off their records and dance all night to their deep collection of house, disco and techno. Since then the party has gone from a cult underground dance haven to a righteous institution for in-the-know-house-heads and late night party fiends a like. If you ever find yourself in the danceteria at 4am, locked in a groove, lost in a smoke and reaching for the lazers, there’s a good chance that Slow Blow are to thank!

SAME OLD SCENE

The pinnacle of dance floor decadence does exist amongst clutter of the Same Old Scene. Champions of exceptional Disco, Funk, Balearic house and 90s dance waves, Power Suit & Sex Azza Weapon have the prowess to prove it.

TONI TONI LEE

Toni Toni Lee is Sydney’s very own funkmaster of freak released his debut EP from the depths of the Goodgod backroom many moons ago. And he’s been making bodies sweat and ladies scream ever since with his very own G-Funk, sensual deep house grooves and wailing Moog solos. Toni takes full flight with vintage synths, full-swung drum machines and yours truly singing sweet vocoded nothings direct to your heart. Prepare to get phreeky when Toni Toni Lee is in the building.

Humans of the limitless grapevine are here to educate your dance floor stomp to the tune of their disco beef and peculiar housecuts. Forever scavenging for audio bliss to maximize their party power, this mysterious posse don’t stop! Expect everything / anything.

JINGLE JANGLE

Jingle Jangle is one party that floats close to the Goodgod soul. Featuring the combined talents of DJs Smokey La Beef & Smart Casual, they will take you back to the forgotten eras of the 1920s through to the 1960s as they have been doing since the dawn of Goodgod and life itself. Harnessing the sounds of Southern Soul and scratchy Rock’n’Roll fused with far-flung Exotica and psychedelic Blues, Jingle Jangle will whip your limbs into a flamboyant fever.

PERFECT SNATCH

Perfect Snatch is a feisty dance floor miracle. Sharp of mind, tongue and costume, her style behind the decks grabs your hips and dazzles. Gushing proven dance hit oddities and those sincere classic era jams from all spectrums of the party realm. You can often find her holding down the Front Bar she’s a certified Goodgod nightlife queen.

SHANTAN WANTAN ICHIBAN

Shantan’s the man behind the essential listening Stolen Records and the hypest of hype men this side of the bridge! He’s also responsible for some of the wildest parties the daneteria has seen – from the prom-themed R&B tribute night Player Haters Ball, to the all-out reggae dance hall bash Dutty Dancing.
